From Mughal marble at Agra to the sandstone forts of Rajasthan and the ruined Vijayanagara capital at Hampi, India's heritage sites span more than a thousand years of competing dynasties. Many are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, which means fixed opening hours, separate ticket prices for Indian and foreign nationals, and often a Monday or Friday closure. Early morning is both the coolest and the least crowded time to visit.
